[ Sunday night and on, there will be a small sheet of paper sitting on his beside table in plain view. This one is a simple page torn out of his notebook and put towards the front, so clearly this one is meant to be seen. It still has the mess scrawl (though having done this with my eyes closed, maybe not as bad as I was expecting), but it's a brief message for one ghost in particular: ]
[ So at some point after Undyne's glorious demise, Break had actually approached her body seemingly out of concern, or maybe even mourning, but that hadn't quite been his intention. His concern and muted mourning had seemed quite genuine, but to any ghost pals watching, he does manage to sneak something off her body: her key. That's odd, isn't it? Break definitely hasn't stolen from corpses in the past, or at least not that any of you would have noticed.
Late on Sunday night, when most everyone is asleep, Break leaves his room to go to Undyne's room. Since it had been locked after her demise, he's the first person to step into it since, and he closes and locks the door after himself. He's careful as he navigates though the room, but he's clearly searching for something. He's passing almost everything over, but no matter how long it takes him (which... could be a while, considering her room), Break won't stop until he finds what he's looking for.
Clover's bookmark.
He takes the bookmark and tucks it away in his jacket, then continues to look around, though by this point, he's humming lightly to himself. ]
Now, the other one would be...
[ The rest of his search doesn't take long, since this one is much easier to find. Once Break finds Undyne's suit of armor, he gathers it all up into a sheet to keep it together, and then into his arms. He doesn't touch anything else, and other than those missing items, there's barely any sign that anyone was even here, since he's careful to keep things as they were, just in case. But he leaves with these items and locks the door after himself.
Undyne spends a good amount of time screaming those exact words at him because...look, she likes Break. She even trusts Break to have their best interests at heart! (Or Gilbert's best interests anyway.) And as a member of Team Pride, she is naturally biased towards assuming he knows what he's doing because come on, everyone on Pride is a badass motherfucker that's the very definition of Pride.
But that doesn't mean she ever gave him permission to steal her stuff. UGH WAS BREAK ACTUALLY A PERVERT ALL THIS TIME DOES HE GET OFF ON STEALING DEAD PEOPLE'S CLOTHES!!!
When all of her screaming clearly fails, she follows him into the basement so she can pick up a small can of food and chuck it at his head. She wants an explanation, jerk.]
[ So I'm assuming Break gets there before [redacted] so that this makes sense because like, ghosts, man.
But once Break makes it down to the basement, he sets Undyne's armor down with a heavy sigh, since that shit's heavy, okay. He takes his cane back in his hand once he's set everything down, since it had been balanced awkwardly in his arms, and he reaches towards the pocket he had put Clover's bookmark in.
However, he doesn't expect that can, and it absolutely hits its mark and clocks him right in the head. Even so, Break's reaction is near immediate, since despite his relaxed way of collecting all of this, he's much more tense than he lets on, and that's especially true in the past two weeks. It's as simple as pivoting on his heel and swinging back in the direction that the can had come from. The sheathe of his cane clatters away with great force through the basement, since he's slinging it off in favor of a very quick draw of his sword.
Where Undyne had seen some of Break's skill before when they had sparred, she had never seen it completely seriously, and so the difference is stark as he draws his blade this time. He swings back, and it's easy to imagine that blade been aimed right for someone's neck with how he steadies the blade in his hand and the force put behind it. Though of course (and luckily), there's no one there. The momentum carries through, though Break makes a harsh sound of effort and exasperation before he stands at the ready to fight.
Though, of course, there's no one.
He closes his eye and still spins around, searching out for a sound, but his expression is contorted in anger, even if it's wild and ready for a fight. It might seem slightly ill-fitting if he thought it was Undyne or someone he knew, and yet his words are rather odd to match. ]
[Wait...had Break been holding back when they sparred? Wow, she's so offended right now. Even though she just got done showing off how badly she probably would have beaten his ass if she'd fought seriously too, she's still offended.
But that expression and his words get her to pause in confusion. She looks over her shoulder, then back at Break. Does he...think he's talking to her? It doesn't really make any sense if so, since it's not like he's ever really needed to challenge her to get her to fight him. In that case, who does he think he's talking to? Has he been challenging one of the sins behind her back? HAS HE BEEN DEPRIVING HER OF ANOTHER SHOUNEN BATTLE GODDAMMIT BREAK HOW DARE YOU HOW DARE YOU
No, okay, she should calm down and actually prove who she is first before grandpa has a heart attack and dies before getting the chance to explain what the fuck is going on. Break can't see shit, which means trying to write her name out won't work, so the best way to get him to figure out it's her is clearly...
She puts one incorporeal hand on his back and another at his knees. Then, summoning all the ghostly energy she has, she proceeds to hoist him up straight into a rather familiar princess carry.
...and then he immediately falls through her arms right onto the floor, because she's still not used to this whole ghostly shit yet. Hmm. She's going to have work on strengthening her ghost muscles if she wants to enact her plan to bully Break by invisibly princess carrying him all over town.]
[ It's not quite late at night when Break is working on cleaning and tidying up his room (it doesn't quite matter to him, after all), but it is taking him a while. He has to be careful, for one, since this is a slightly different process when you're blind, but he's actually not terrible at it. For all he teases and taunts Gilbert about his very servile hobbies, Break isn't exactly a stranger to them. He just doesn't do them. It's an important distinction, especially when Gilbert is usually the one to take care of that kind of thing before it ever even occurs to Break...
With his room decently messy, it's a process to tidy everything up, which also includes emptying out and reorganizing his safe. It's actually pretty full now, being stuffed with everything from Emily to Gilbert's notebook, to a half-finished scarf in a charcoal grey that might remind you of someone's particular clothing preferences (they're not gay). It's just reorganizing things as if Break is expecting to put more in it, which is slightly odd, but probably not terribly out of place. Everything is neatly put in place and Break sighs with something like relief, since it feels like something is at least put right, more or less.
But his breath catches.
It just seems like something catching in his throat at first, and he coughs, but the coughing doesn't stop. It grows more violent until Break is having to support his weight by pressing a hand heavily against the wall. It's probably a familiar sound for at least one ghost, because as Break's shoulders shake, the cough suddenly turns wet. As soon as the quality of that cough changes, he doesn't exactly fall, but he shifts to kneel, and blood drips between his fingers and onto the carpet.
He still coughs, but it at least seems to lessen in severity, even though he sounds like he's having more trouble catching a breath from the exertion. If any ghost friends are around, they might even catch what he says, though it's muffled and murmured into his hand: ]
And of course, Gilbert - who had probably just been hanging around like an awkward beanpole that haunts his friends - is nyooming over to Break's side pretty much as soon as the coughing starts, before it even edges into that familiar bloody sound, because he knows it's coming. To that end, his ghostly friends may notice that while he looks concerned and distraught, he doesn't look surprised at all.
They'd talked about this before, of course. Extensively.
After the muffled words, Break will feel cloth against his wrist because Gilbert's brought the handy-dandy handkerchief back. He'll speak aloud, though:]
[Unlike Gilbert, Undyne is not a sad awkward loser who hangs around her friends pathetically 24/7! This just happens to be luckily happening during her scheduled five minute breaks from getting her ass handed to her by Vegeta where she can be a sad awkward loser hanging around her friends before she dives straight back into shounen training montage.
Also unlike Gilbert, she definitely looks startled by this. Ugh why are human bodies so gross and also how do they work.]
What's wrong with him?! Is this because of...whatever the heck he's been doing? [SHE'S GONNA KICK SOME SINPARENT'S ASS IF THEY'VE BEEN HURTING BREAK]
Good idea, but the last time I tried to carry him he fell right through my arms!
[ON UNDYNE'S SHOULDERS AS USUAL, PROBABLY??? this is just. where she lives. like Clover doesn't immediately reattach herself to Undyne the second she and Vegeta are done beating the shit out of each other, every day all the time without fail. Clover's got it in her to look pretty startled, too, at least! How can a person be so terrible at taking care of himself, honestly.]
You're getting better at moving stuff around, though, right? What if we just, like, dragged him off to bed? [SOMETHING TELLS HER HE'S NOT DRAGGING HIMSELF TO BED AT ALL]
[ It's a very boring Wednesday afternoon, and after doing whatever it is that Break does all day, he seems to decide that it's time to do something else. He shrugs, then heads to the bathroom after grabbing some (horribly mismatched) clothes from his closet. Considering his ever-present visitor(s), he changes in the bathroom now. Little does he know, this modesty will not actually help him today. ]
I'm going to take a shower. Go do something else for a while.
[ This is directed to Gilbert, really, since he assumes that if anyone else is here, they're not weird and creepy like Gilbert... Not that Break thinks that Gilbert would be peeking, exactly, but he does think that he'd stand inside the bathroom and make sure that Break didn't fall. Which he does not want, thank you.
Yet even so, he heads into the bathroom and starts to run the shower. It's only as long as it takes for the water to heat up before he gets in, and so begins a terrible, embarrassing day for Xerxes Break. ]
[Why is Undyne even here again. Look, being dead can get super boring when she's not training, and sometimes she just needs a brief recharge from getting the shit beaten out of her okay!!
But wow, even she winces at the clothes Break's taking with him, and this is coming from someone who wears leather jackets and muscle shirts all the time.] Okay, I know we should save some of our energy, but I think fixing Break's clothes is definitely a righteous and worthy use for it.
[And then she turns her head slowly to eye Gilbert.]
[Gilbert doesn't even look twice at the shit Break picks out for himself anymore, okay. He's just immune now... But he'd agree anyway, because he knows Break gets shit all the time from people who are like "HAHA THAT WEIRD CLOWN MAN". Someone help him??
Someone help Gilbert, too.]
It's not— Well--! No! [CONVINCING.] But I get worried sometimes. Not a lot of people are on this end of the hallway anymore, so what would happen to Break if he fell and no one heard him? What if he didn't get any help in time?
[Clover's excuse for being here is that Undyne's here, because that's what happens when you basically live (or...you know, not live but...exist......) on someone else's shoulders. Look, they both remember the last time they thought it was safe to put Clover down!!!
Saving energy implies that Clover has or ever has had impulse control or prioritization skills. Fashion is such an important priority and she nods along in agreement, then promptly bursts into giggles at Gilbert's shitty attempts at defending himself in the face of Undyne's judging. His actual point has been lost to her snickering, sorry Gilbert.]
[ Considering the havoc that someone(s) wreaked on Rhys's door, unsurprisingly, Rhys will be staying with Break at this point forward. More surprisingly is that Break was actually the one to offer, but only the very observant ghosts (AKA Gilbert) would have overheard this offer, most likely. Rhys had brought some of his stuff over earlier in the day, but both Rhys and Break had left for some time at night.
Rhys returns, but he's very noticeably angry. Whatever he does in the time before Break shows up, I'll leave to Squee to decide and describe, but maybe ten minutes or so after, Break returns to his room. He closes and locks the door after himself, but he's quick to pick up a conversation quite seriously. ]
...It's at least taken care of, more or less. Though if it's any comfort, I'm no happier about it than you are.
[ man, that ten minute window sure is embarrassing because rhys did multiple things in that time.
first, he dramatically threw himself down on the bed. second, he screamed into a pillow, punched the mattress, and banged his head against the bed a few times. third, he rolled himself into a blanket burrito which would have been fine if he didn't, fourth, fall off the bed into the burrito and proceed to bang his head against the bedside table as he goes down. fifth, there's a lot of swearing and jerking around as he tries to untangle himself from the blankets.
finally though, he'll crawl out of the blankets and just sort of sit against the edge of his bed, head fallen backwards onto the mattress as he stares up at the ceiling. his arms hug around himself and he swallows heavily before staying like that in silence until break shows up. he doesn't look up as break does but at his words, he closes his eyes and frowns to himself. ]
Thanks. You understand why this is all bullshit, right? Why I can't just accept it for what it is?
[ a sigh here ]
"Trust me", she says and it's like okay, yeah. I'll just go on and do right that without caring about my own life in the process.
[ Break pauses and he hesitates before a softer smile briefly comes to his face. He shakes his head as if to get rid of that expression, and it easily goes back to something harder and more steeled. ]
She responded better than I expected, essentially. But I was trying to be careful with my words. I can disagree, but I don't want to make her angry and have her decide that we're more trouble than we're worth.
[ He steps further into the room to take a seat on his own bed, but he doesn't flop down dramatically just yet. He keeps a hold on his cane, almost nervously tossing the handle back and forth between his hands. Break is full of an anxious energy himself, and though there's a clear determination on his face, he doesn't seem very happy about it. ]
She's just a normal girl. Perhaps I thought differently because she's so important to things here, but I realized that tonight.
[So after witnessing a certain event Tuesday morning, Undyne makes a straight beeline into Break's room. She doesn't give a fuck what he's doing, he can be naked and making out with Rhys for all she cares, she is too full of rage to notice.
She grabs the nearest teacup and hurls it straight at the wall next to Break's face, shattering it. She doesn't actually want to hurt the guy (yet), so it won't hit him, but it sure will come close.]
What the fuck, Break?! [She knows he can't hear her, but she screams at him from the top of her lungs anyway just in case.] You told me to trust you and I did and now Papyrus is dead! What the fuck was the point of anything if he -- if I couldn't --
[Her breath goes ragged for a moment before she smashes another cup into the wall.] Tell me what your plan is! Tell me who I need to kill! Stop being so damn mysterious and tell me how to save him!
[ Whatever Break is doing, it clearly doesn't matter because he's certainly going to stop doing it very quickly. That teacup smashes against the wall near him and Break flinches sharply as is more or less habit when the ghosts surprise him, but they usually aren't breaking things intentionally. Rather than just startled surprise, there's at least concern in his expression. ]
What—
[ He starts, but it's also quickly cut off by another teacup flying into the wall, which makes him flinch again, but he also starts to move towards angry. ]
Stop throwing things! If you want to tell me something, I don't know what that means!
[Does he. Does he really. But fine, since Break is so insistent on being blind and unable to read or hear her ghostly screaming from beyond, she'll phase out of his room and into hers next door. She grabs one of the bones Papyrus gave her from her drawer, goes back to his room (either via opening her own door or just phasing through the wall depending on whether she can transport solid objects because I still don't know the limits of ghost powers whoops), and hurls it onto his lap.]
[ Since Rhys had come to stay with Break last week, they've been more or less inseparable. It might seem like something close for the two of them, but more than anyone else, Gilbert will probably be able to figure out the deeper reasoning because he knows Break well. He's always tense and on guard, or he's the one to suggest going places with Rhys, or even just being a bit more ready to use his sword, such as when Sans and Papyrus had visited. It's clear that Break wants to protect Rhys, and though he wouldn't say that, it shows clearly through those kinds of gestures. So as such, it's a bit rare when he's alone.
But sometime on Wednesday after Sans is found (probably while Rhys is showering or something, so don't make it weird, ghosts), he is. He's probably knitting, since it's what he pretty much always does during idle times, but though it's a quiet activity, he pauses in his work. His gaze turns up, even though there's admittedly no reason for him to actually turn his head and he knows it. He asks a question to seemingly no one, but considering how much he's been haunted lately, he does know he's probably very rarely alone. ]
[He definitely isn't alone... In the same way that Break has been watching carefully over Rhys, Gilbert's been sticking to Break even more closely than before this week. It's clearly a roulette spin for who goes and who stays and even if his logical self doubts he'd be able to do anything to stop Break from dying if he's selected, he lets optimism guide his actions, anyway.
Which means Break will hear a little tap against the yes paper within a few seconds. He's actually gotten a little better about conserving his energy, kind of...! More like he's trying to save it up for DEFENSIVE MURDER if that becomes necessary.]
[ At least for once, he's not surprised or scared out of his mind by this revelation. Remember when ghosts were simple? Remember when his paper had a use instead of getting actual people chucked at him??? Break does, and he's glad that they're returning to that. He smiles and nods, but there's another question he wants to ask before he gets into what he's thinking. ]
[so first Clover tries banging drawers around and dropping things like she's looking for something and that lasts all of about thirty seconds before she decides that ghost-holding a real pencil is not worth the effort when there's a perfectly good robot arm ripe for the possessing right there
so instead it's Rhys's arm smacking at the drawer in search of some paper and a pencil while Clover tries to figure out how possession and also using a tall person's limb works. this is fine. this is the most efficient method of conveying information, definitely]
[ things rhys didn't expect today: his arm going fucking insane. again. he is really sick and tired of his arm just gaining autonomy on its own and doing things without him. that's getting tiring. rhys was in the middle of getting a fresh pair of socks when his arm suddenly rebels and the pair of neon green and yellow striped socks he was holding just gets thrown when it jerks.
probably into break's face, actually.
then the arm just starts swinging this way and that and definitely bangs around the furniture in its attempt to find something to write with. rhys sure is just getting dragged along for the ride, huh. ]
Erk. What... what's going on? Who's there? Why'd you take my arm? Duuuude, come on.
[ Break at least looks up from his knitting when Rhys's arm starts going berserk (again), but at this point, he finds this sort of thing fairly predictable. He sighs heavily, and he's ready to play ghost translator, but he does get interrupted. The socks flying into his face catches him off guard, and he stammers over a few syllables in flustered surprise, since the ghosts startling him is one thing, but socks are another...
This is at least little more than a minor surprise, though, since he just ends up picking those and setting them aside once he quickly regains his composure. ]
Aaaah, more visitors~? They really are impatient. And especially rude to you. Maybe you should have made more friends~?
for someone in particular

...It's at least taken care of, more or less. Though if it's any comfort, I'm no happier about it than you are.

first, he dramatically threw himself down on the bed. second, he screamed into a pillow, punched the mattress, and banged his head against the bed a few times. third, he rolled himself into a blanket burrito which would have been fine if he didn't, fourth, fall off the bed into the burrito and proceed to bang his head against the bedside table as he goes down. fifth, there's a lot of swearing and jerking around as he tries to untangle himself from the blankets.
finally though, he'll crawl out of the blankets and just sort of sit against the edge of his bed, head fallen backwards onto the mattress as he stares up at the ceiling. his arms hug around himself and he swallows heavily before staying like that in silence until break shows up. he doesn't look up as break does but at his words, he closes his eyes and frowns to himself. ]

TUESDAY BETRAYAL!!!

What—
[ He starts, but it's also quickly cut off by another teacup flying into the wall, which makes him flinch again, but he also starts to move towards angry. ]
Stop throwing things! If you want to tell me something, I don't know what that means!
[ CHILL ]

[Does he. Does he really. But fine, since Break is so insistent on being blind and unable to read or hear her ghostly screaming from beyond, she'll phase out of his room and into hers next door. She grabs one of the bones Papyrus gave her from her drawer, goes back to his room (either via opening her own door or just phasing through the wall depending on whether she can transport solid objects because I still don't know the limits of ghost powers whoops), and hurls it onto his lap.]

wednesday
But sometime on Wednesday after Sans is found (probably while Rhys is showering or something, so don't make it weird, ghosts), he is. He's probably knitting, since it's what he pretty much always does during idle times, but though it's a quiet activity, he pauses in his work. His gaze turns up, even though there's admittedly no reason for him to actually turn his head and he knows it. He asks a question to seemingly no one, but considering how much he's been haunted lately, he does know he's probably very rarely alone. ]
Are you around, Gilbert?
no subject
Which means Break will hear a little tap against the yes paper within a few seconds. He's actually gotten a little better about conserving his energy, kind of...! More like he's trying to save it up for DEFENSIVE MURDER if that becomes necessary.]

saturday
so instead it's Rhys's arm smacking at the drawer in search of some paper and a pencil while Clover tries to figure out how possession and also using a tall person's limb works. this is fine. this is the most efficient method of conveying information, definitely]

probably into break's face, actually.
then the arm just starts swinging this way and that and definitely bangs around the furniture in its attempt to find something to write with. rhys sure is just getting dragged along for the ride, huh. ]
Erk. What... what's going on? Who's there? Why'd you take my arm? Duuuude, come on.
no subject
This is at least little more than a minor surprise, though, since he just ends up picking those and setting them aside once he quickly regains his composure. ]
Aaaah, more visitors~? They really are impatient. And especially rude to you. Maybe you should have made more friends~?
[ since break the friendless loser grandpa ]
