APPEARANCE AND BODY PERCEPTION① Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?Break is a man of average height at 174cm (5'8"), and his build is definitely deceptive on two levels. For one, the clothes he wears (which we'll get to later) deceptively make him look like he has a more normal build than he actually does. After all, Break is very skinny to the point of looking unhealthy. It's not quite that he has a naturally scrawny build, but instead, he's lost body mass over the years from being sickly. He was very physically fit in his prime, but now it's more difficult for him to keep a healthy build. However, this is also the second deceptive part of his build, because despite being skinny and unhealthy, he's also surprisingly strong and light on his feet. So in his build, he's probably more trim and muscular than you'd expect, but with how skinny he is, is just looks weird and probably gross.
② How old is he?[pulls out flowchart] well you see—
More seriously, this is a surprisingly complicated question to answer because time is a difficult and nebulous thing in Pandora Hearts, and this is especially true for Break. In a manner of speaking, he has three ages, and all of them are accurate, but also really strange to describe if you're not canon familiar.
First, we have Break's physical age, which is 24. As we'll get to later (expect me to say this a lot), Xerxes Break is an alias for his real name, Kevin Regnard. Due to a series of unfortunate events, Kevin Really Hecked Up and formed a contract with a demon-like entity called a Chain. Making a contract with a Chain will halt your physical aging, and so Break will remain physically twenty-four forever.
However, since making contracts with demons/Chains is a bad idea, he was thrown into the approximate canon equivalent of Hell called the Abyss, where he was definitely supposed to die. Yet he managed to make a deal with the being that oversees that dimension, and he was allowed to live. He was spat out of the Abyss, where we get to our next complication. Time flows differently in the Abyss, so while he was only in the Abyss for a short time, thirty years passed outside of it, which brings him to a nebulous 54.
This took place five years before the very beginning of Pandora Hearts, and with the events of the first volume of the series, a different character was pulled into the Abyss. While he was there, ten more years passed. As such, this puts Break's mental age at 39! However, since I pick later canonpoints, I put it at 40 for a nice, easy number. Combining all of his nebulous Abyss time, this puts that age at 69/70 years. The wiki estimates that nebulous age at 139 years, but I also think they calculated this incorrectly. So.
As you can see, timelines are very complicated in this series, so in summary, Break is mentally 40 years old and physically 24 years old, and some odd time shenanigans can put him at a bit older than that. However, the first two are the most important, since no one understands the Abyss anyways.
③ Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well, or does he slouch?Varied! Break's posture varies a lot depending on the situation and what "persona" he's playing at in the moment. In truth, his default is actually fairly formal and rigid. He knows how to carry himself well, and he does have good posture from a combination of taking his swordsmanship seriously where posture is important and also that he was raised to be a knight and servant. However, by now, he only shows this kind of posture when he either has to (such as when he's at Pandora's headquarters) or when he's actually taking something seriously.
As both are rather rare, he instead takes on a posture that fits his general persona of being a dumb, weird, old man. He slouches a lot and won't carry himself at his full height, though he's generally just shifting his posture to match whatever joke he's going with. A lot about this persona is exaggerated and eccentric, so his posture matches that idea. Odd as it is, this is the one that's actually "fake" and put-on, but it would be reasonable for anyone that noticed the difference to assume the opposite.
④ How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? In short, extremely poor.
While all Chains place stress on their Contractors, Break's Chain, the Mad Hatter, is especially bad for this. However, because Break had an illegal contract before, the effect seems to be compounded, and Break's health has been deteriorating presumably for a long time, but his health rapidly gets worse through the course of the series. The actual nature of the damage the Mad Hatter causes to his body is never explicitly defined, but it's chronic, degenerative, and worsens every time Break uses his Chain.
His vaguely defined illness is most frequently shown through Break being prone to fatigue or exhaustion, coughing up blood, and vision loss. Each time Break uses his Chain, he ends up bedridden for no small period of time afterwards (at least a few days). Daily physical activity doesn't seem to strain him, but depending on the canonpoint I choose, more than standard daily activity will tire him out quickly. Very late in the series, he also seems to show weakness in even being able to grip objects. Break himself describes the illness as feeling like his body is cracking/shattering, but otherwise, he rarely speaks about it.
Break also gradually loses his vision throughout the series, starting with full vision, but it worsens to only being able to see vague figures and eventually to complete blindness. I never choose a canonpoint for him where he has his complete sight, so if his canonpoint is Retrace/Chapter 82 or earlier, he has some, but limited sight, and if it's after that, he has no sight at all.
This condition is also ultimately terminal, since it's what ends up killing him.
However, even with this condition, Break is weirdly physically fit, agile, and strong. There are limitations (that are also canonpoint dependent), but generally speaking he's capable of surprising feats of strength and ability, albeit only for short periods of time before he tires himself out. He's an extremely skilled swordsman, and he's also able to use his other senses as a sort of replacement for his sight. Essentially, he has Daredevil-style blindness, but probably even worse than that with regards to "realism" since he's a manga character.
⑤ How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?ANSWER.
⑥ How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?Break was quite handsome when he was younger, and he still has attractive features, but this is also more subjective with Break than it might be for some other characters. He has no left eye at all and the socket is heavily scarred, for example, though he does obscure this with his bangs as best he can. He also tends to look very unhealthy, and has rather gaunt features with especially prominent dark circles under his eyes. He may be physically twenty-four, but his actual age has still worn on him, and it makes him look at least a decade older than that, I'd guess. He's a fixer-upper, if we're honest, but he does clean up nicely.
I will note though that he's definitely not exactly drawn that way, but it's definitely my interpretation that he doesn't look as nice as Mochijun draws him lol... He looks like a hot mess most of the time, in my opinion, since even if he's physically twenty-four forever, Break also doesn't take care of himself, is sick, and also has some fairly severe injuries, so. He would also agree and doesn't think of himself as attractive at all.
⑦ Describe his complexion: dark, light, clear, scarred? His complexion is fairly youthful since he's eternally twenty-four, but it's also been scarred and otherwise weathered over the years. His left eye is the most visible example of scarring, but he has scars all over his body in varying sizes and also ages. These are just from fighting and being an assassin for a living, so he's definitely got the wear and tear of being a bad person.
⑧ Describe his hair: color, texture, style.Break's hair is... confusing. To put it very simply, Break in particular suffers from an odd case of anime hair in that it doesn't look that bad at first, but then when you answer a question like this, you're like "wait, what's even happening here." Break's hair is naturally white/silver, and has always been that color, though he'll definitely joke about it being from age. In terms of style, it's always kept messy, but just above his shoulders. The most prominent thing about his hair is that his bangs are quite long, since he always uses them to cover the left half of his face and obscure the fact that he's missing an eye.
The odd part comes in the actual shape of his hair, because it totally looks like he has cat ears or something, but no, this is apparently just how his hair sits. It's one of those things that's just very "anime hair" and is best not to think about. For formal events, Break will pin his hair up, by which I mean Reim will pin it up. Are you seeing a pattern here?
⑨ What color are his eyes?Singular eye in Break's case, but deep, blood red. Break is a special sort of existence in his canon called a Child of Misfortune, and they're always marked by having red eyes. Though since we're talking about eyes, the empty eye socket is always empty (Break has never bothered to get a glass eye or cover it up), and it's pretty horrifying. Break is somewhat self-conscious about it since he covers it up with his hair, but not so much as to do something more sensible like get an eyepatch. The socket itself is scarred, with the most scarring on the interior since it was quite literally ripped out of his head.
⑩ Does the character have any other noteworthy features?Actually, yes. Break has surprisingly nice hands, down to well manicured nails. I'm not kidding at all. This seems like it's an art style thing at first, but no, only Break is drawn with hands this nice, so this is a legit part of his character design.
In addition, one of the novels also notes that Break has very long eyelashes. Go figure.
⑪ What are his chief tension centers?I hate this question and never answer it, and I'm not changing that tradition today.
⑫ What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?In short, Break is a fashion disaster.
His usual outfit is a weird hot mess, and this strange outfit as his default kind of sets the standard for everything else. Wither everything from an elaborate system of straps just to hold his coat up so that it doesn't fit him properly to floodpants to shoes that look like they belong in something designed by Tetsuya Nomura, Break is just a hot mess when he's allowed to dress himself. He also usually has a very odd, kind of ugly doll perched on his left shoulder too, so... He's just confusing to look at, generally speaking. But that's just one outfit, you say. Surely he can dress himself sometimes!
He really can't.
The exception is when someone (by which I mean Reim) makes him look presentable, in which case he does look halfway decent. But if you let Break pick his own clothing, it's just awful.
⑬ Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them? His clothes generally don't fit well at all unless he's going to a social event where not looking like a weird hobo is required. Break prefers loosely fitting clothing for comfort, but I also think it's to make himself not look so skinny. However, he is very comfortable in his clothes! Even when he's wearing something more formal and fitting, he never expresses discomfort. I think he just doesn't care too much about what he's wearing, and based on that collage above, you definitely get that sense in the fashion department...
⑭ Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?Technically, he does wear something different when he's on the job, but being "on the job" tends to be loosely defined for him. Most of the time even when he's technically working, he wears his default monstrosity, but he does have a uniform as an agent of Pandora. He wears this a few times in the series, but not frequently. He only seems to wear it when officially acting as an agent of the organization or when attending things at the headquarters.
⑮ You knew it was coming: what kind of underwear does he wear, if any?In short, the answer is "Victorian underwear," and luckily I've done this meme for another Victorian character, so feast your eyes on this. It's just as sexy as Break himself, by which I mean not at all.>> top
SPEECH① What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?Break is voiced by Ishida Akira in the anime, and despite all the problems the anime has, it does have fairly good voice actors! You can hear a sample of Break's voice here, but in general, he has a light, rather youthful, and overall clear voice. The way he often speaks is quite lilted and singsong, so he sounds like he's not taking anything seriously or that he's being insincere much of the time. Describing this in text is a bit weird, so give the clip a listen and you'll be able to hear what I mean!
② How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?Break generally speaks in one of two ways: either he's being a clownish asshole or he's actually taking something seriously... When he's being clownish, almost everything about his voice is exaggerated, unsurprisingly. There's a lot of variance in his tone, since he's naturally the kind of person to really run with his teasing or his jokes, so he'll change his voice depending on whatever suits the joke most. Still, when he's acting like this, it's easiest to sum up his voice as "annoying," since that's definitely what he's going for.
However, when he's actually taking something seriously, his voice is very even-toned and even a bit soft. It's not that he's soft-spoken, however, because in both cases, Break doesn't often hesitate in how and when he speaks. When he does, it tends to be when he's facing a difficult subject, since there he'll be much more thoughtful and careful with his words. However, that's a question a bit further down, so I'll explain that more there!
③ Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?Accent or dialect is harder to discern since 1) the series is in Japanese and 2) the characters don't actually speak Japanese, but thanks to this google doc, I can actually go into more detail about the odd way that Break speaks, since it is very distinct!
In short, Break speaks politely to others, but only on the surface. In Japanese, this is shown by how he uses the polite desu/masu towards most characters, but his sentence endings are insincere-sounding katakana. This tends to come off as Break mocking others through his very politeness, and this tends to fit with his usual speech habits. After all, where many characters are consistent in how they refer to people in public and in private, Break has a very wide gap. Break tends to speak very differently in public vs. in private, where he'll be as formal and polite as he needs to in public, but he'll drop it almost completely in private, which shows that his regard for these social norms is only on the surface.
In English, this kind of distinction is hard to capture, but Break is just one of those characters that tends to abuse~ tildes~, for example. Using those tildes and also drawing out certain words is how I try to convey his clownish insincerity, and even occasionally with hearts ♥ and stars ☆ if he's truly being an ass. However, when he's more serious, these weird turns of speech will drop almost completely, since his weird, clownish mannerisms are definitely just for show, and he does know how and when to be serious.
④ What language(s) does he speak and with how much fluency?Language in Pandora Hearts is an odd thing, because we know there are two languages that exist, but neither of them are ever explicitly defined. Both languages do take influence from certain regions of the real world, but they're also said to not actually be those languages. So. The language that Break speaks with fluency is the main language of the series. It seems to be a mix of French and English (based on the names of key concepts and places), and Break in particular occasionally speaks in an older form of it (see below). In addition, he probably has some familiarity with the other language of the series, which is based in Asian languages, but he's not anywhere close to fluent.
⑤ Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?Break never switches languages, but he absolutely does switch dialects! Like above, I have to give credit for the detail on language usage to this google doc, but in summary, Break occasionally speaks in a way that sounds very archaic. In Japanese, this difference in speaking is shown through using informal sentence endings and sounds kind of noble and archaic. This is meant to convey that Break does come from a rather distant time as compared to when the story takes place, since this is only used when he's speaking more as "Kevin" than "Break".
This manner of speaking is technically his "normal" way of speaking, since this is what he would have grown up speaking. However, once he started to live as Xerxes Break, he also changed how he spoke to be more modern. Since he does switch between the two, presumably that means this was a conscious decision on his part rather than naturally picking up more modern vernacular. Break generally only switches to this more archaic form of speaking when he's taking something extremely seriously.
⑥ Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?Generally speaking, Break is an above average impromptu speaker, but he's not remarkable at it. He's a quick thinker and is able to respond to things snappily, whether it's a joke or something more serious, but there are exceptions that trip him up. However, while Break is fairly good at impromptu speaking, that doesn't mean he will. Break is the sort of person that's likely to strategically stay silent on issues and keep his thoughts to himself or let someone else lead a conversation.
⑦ Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?Break isn't so much eloquent as he's a fairly good impromptu speaker, but he doesn't really struggle with his words. He can come off as eloquent when he's speaking because he has turns of phrases that are a bit dated and just naturally sound more eloquent, but he would have been quite normal for his original time period.>> top
However, much more interesting here is that he's definitely not always a confident speaker. If it's something objective or factual, he's able to speak well on it, but when it comes to subjective things or anything pertaining to feelings? Then he absolutely struggles and falters. Whether it's someone else's feelings or his own, this is a set of subjects that he's definitely extremely awkward with and has difficult speaking about. He doesn't like talking about his own personal feelings, and he doesn't know how to handle other peoples'. So as soon as emotions are on the table, all of Break's skill with speaking tends to go out the window.

RELATIONSHIPS① Describe this character's relationship with his parents. No idea! We know very little about Break when he was going by his birthname (Kevin Regnard), but presumably, he didn't have much of a relationship with his parents. Considering how servitude seems to work in Pandora Hearts, he was likely taken in by the Sinclair family when he was very young. If he knew his parents, he certainly doesn't have a relationship with them at all, since they're never mentioned.
② Does the character have any siblings? What is their relationship like?Similarly, he never mentions siblings either. If he had them, they're not important to him.
③ Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?Same as above. We don't know of anyone related to Break by blood at all.
④ Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them? When Kevin was tossed out of the Abyss, he ended up being taken in by one of the noble households: the Rainsworth family. The Rainsworths are a family noted for having powerful women as the heads of their family, and Break came to respect and deeply treasure three generations of Rainsworth women. There's the matriarch, Cheryl, her daughter, Shelly, and her daughter, Sharon. Cheryl and Shelly both hold different positions of esteem to Break, but the youngest, Sharon is definitely the one he feels is the closest to family.
Sharon was very young when Kevin fell out of the Abyss, and as he recovered, he often helped care for her and entertain her, and as a result, they grew very close. Break considers her like a little sister, and he deeply treasures her happiness and well-being to the point that he does keep some things from her with the idea of protecting her (which she doesn't appreciate). Break absolutely cares for Sharon the most out of the people he knows, and he's very fiercely protective of her.
⑤ Who is the character's best friend? How did they meet?Break's best friend is Reim Lunettes, and they met in a way that only Break can meet people... When Kevin was tossed out of the Abyss, he landed on the Rainsworths' lawn, and the people to find him were a young Sharon Rainsworth and Reim Lunettes (who is a servant of the Barma household, which has strong ties with the Rainsworth household). Reim was a young boy then (around 11), and as Kevin recovered from his ordeals, Reim ended up having to deal with more of Kevin's shit than a little boy really should have... Reim seems to have taken on the role of making sure that Kevin didn't do anything super stupid, since much of the art of the trio when they were younger shows Reim lecturing Break, and Reim was also unlucky enough to witness some of the uglier parts of Kevin's grief, like when Break stuck his fingers into his eye socket (as you'd expect, this link is gross).
However, as Reim got older and Break got less angsty, they settled into a close, albeit weird friendship. Reim is the straight-laced foil to all of Break's weird personality quirks, and he's the person that Break seems to not only trust without question, but he's also the person that Break feels comfortable around to actually be honest with. As mentioned above, he views Sharon like a little sister, so he's often careful to the point of being distant in not burdening her with his problems. By comparison, Reim is often the first person to know about Break's struggles, and Reim is also the person that's both able to best deal with Break, but also most able to support him.
In addition, Break also definitely gets a little crazy when he thinks that Reim died, so. That's a true measure of friendship by Break standards...
⑥ Does he have other close friends? He does, but Break is at varying levels of actually accepting that friendship depending on the person. For why that is, see the next question, but in summary, Break is just really bad at being a normal person.
His other closest friend is Gilbert Nightray, though poor Gilbert has a difficult life in being Break's friend... Gilbert was recruited at a young age to be Break's protege and spy into the Nightray household on Break's behalf. Break trained Gilbert to be a Pandora agent, but Break also bullied poor Gilbert mercilessly for about ten years. Gilbert has a naturally nervous personality, so Break just kind of made these problems worse. Even so, Break does trust Gilbert, and through the events of the series, he does come to consider him a fairly close friend. He's not as close to Gilbert as he is to Reim or Sharon, but Gilbert is likely the otherwise closest friend he has.
Other than Gilbert, Break has also reluctantly come to accept the friendship of Oz Vessalius and Alice. Oz and Alice are the protagonists of the manga, and through lots of shonen trial and error having to do with [spoilers], Break eventually accepts both of them as friends, though he never actually says as much to either of them. Oz he respects more than Alice, since Alice is kind of dumb, but he does care for both of them and their well-being.
⑦ Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?Break absolutely doesn't make friends easily. At all. And it's his own fault for being old and stubborn.
In short, I like to joke that Break's whole character arc centers around him coming to accept the relationships and friendships that he has, since Break is very, very proud, and he has big difficulties in accepting help from others. He deliberately keeps people at an emotional distance because he's not exactly great at handling his own emotions, and he doesn't like to burden other people with his problems even if he lets them close enough to hear of them in the first place.
Break is very deliberate in how he can be very hard to get along with, so it's probably say to say that most people that meet him don't like him. He doesn't even want peoples' friendship, so it takes true Shonen Determination like Oz's to actually make it through to him. He's a misanthrope that pushes people away, and so it makes him very difficult to tolerate, much less befriend!
⑧ Which does he consider more important: family or friends?Friends. As mentioned above, Break isn't close to his family at all, so it's his friends and found family that matter far more to him.
⑨ Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?Break is single, and I honestly don't think he's really ever been in a romantic relationship at all, actually... He's had crushes (see below), but I don't think he's ever acted on them. If he ever had a romantic relationship, it definitely would have been as Kevin, since with the events that made him "Break," I just doubt that he would ever pursue romantic feelings for a variety of reasons.
⑩ Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse? He is not!
⑪ Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?I'm sure his first crush was just someone he knew as Kevin, but since we know so little about that period of his life, I can just simplify that to "he had one." However, in terms of what we know about Break, I do think that he had a crush on Sharon's mother, Shelly Rainsworth. Shelly seems to be the person most responsible for more or less rehabilitating Kevin and helping him not only physically heal from his wounds, but emotionally heal from them as well. It's definitely clear that Break holds her in extremely high esteem, and her words and help are something that he treasures greatly, and I just personally interpret part of his feelings for Shelly as being romantic.
However, Break never acted on these feelings, and he never would. For one, Shelly was presumably married, since by the time Kevin came to the Rainsworths, Sharon was already a few years old. Seeing as the world of Pandora Hearts is vaguely Victorian, I'm going to say that extramarital sex is frowned upon, and we just don't know anything about Shelly's husband other than that he clearly existed. So for one, Break would never act on his feelings and put Shelly in a position of scandal like that, but I also just don't think he felt that he was good enough for her even if this wasn't the case. Break likely held a very knightly opinion of her in that she was untouchable for him, and he doesn't seem to begrudge that in the slightest. He's very grateful for Shelly saving him, and he deeply mourned her passing, but he doesn't regret that their bond was never romantic. He's fine with that feeling being unrequited.
⑫ What does he look for in a romantic partner? In short, he doesn't, but the slightly longer answer is that he looks for someone that's willing to deal with the fact that he doesn't... Break has a lot of issues that he's very well aware of, and he absolutely doesn't want to burden others with them. It's an uphill battle to get him to share anything, and combined with his fatalism, he personally feels that getting close to him is something of a wasted effort. He's undertaking an impossible quest as well as slowly dying, so he really doesn't want to have to put anyone through that kind of suffering on his behalf.
If you're saying "that sure sounds like manpain," you're completely correct, and as such, he responds best to the stereotypical character type that's there for manpain characters. AKA he looks for someone that's both extremely caring and extremely persistent, since it's really the only way to get through to him. He makes a lot of effort to push people away, so to actually be close to Break, you have to be willing to put up with a lot of his shit, sometimes without calling him on it. So don't date Break, basically. He's genuinely a terrible romantic partner that really shouldn't date anyone until he gets his own problems under control (which he never will). At least he's aware of that.
On a more shallow note, according to a drama CD, he likes big titties.
⑬ Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If so, how does he relate to them? If not, does he want any?God, no. He doesn't want any either.
⑭ Does he have any rivals or enemies?ANSWER.
⑮ What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey Scale?Pretty much exclusively heterosexual. Romance isn't a part of Break's storyline, so there's not exactly much insight on this... Still, based on the few pieces we have, he never demonstrates any interest in men (and in fact makes a mildly homophobic comment in a drama cd), but he does show interest in women, which makes me assume he's straight. If he had romantic interest in a man, I would also tend to guess that it would come with a social taboo since the series is vaguely Victorian, but. Who knows, really...
⑯How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him? It's not important to him at all, that's for sure. I'm still debating whether or not he's a virgin or not because he totally could be. That's how low of a priority it is for him. He isn't quite a prude, and he wouldn't object to it, but I think it's just very low in importance to him as compared to other things.
⑰ What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?ANSWER.>> top
BELIEFS① Do you know your character's astrological sign? How well does he fit the type?Break's birthday is September 30th, which makes him a Libra. Considering this is is the summary for Libra:Libra is delicate, charming, sociable, perpetually compromising. For this reason, you may sometimes come across as hesitant and weak because you dare not to insist or to give your opinion. You prefer to act as a unifier, an element of understanding and equity, even though it is detrimental to your own assertiveness. You loathe violence, you spare no efforts for the sake of pacification and you adjust to the situation with flexibility and charm.I'm going to say that Break doesn't fit his sign at all. He's pretty much the exact opposite.
② Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?Sssssort of. Religion is weird in Pandora Hearts because there's no formal religion, but instead many of the aspects that religion "covers" such as life, death, and one's place and purpose in the world are all a bit more literal. These aspects are all tied to the Abyss, and as such, Break knows that they're all factually true because he's experienced the phenomena relating to the Abyss in person or otherwise just knows that they're factual elements of his world. Even Break has a very literal form of bad luck as a Child of Misfortune, which is a sort of distortion to those factual elements of the Abyss. He's aware of these things and they impact his life, but he also doesn't seem to hold them to any comparable importance to religion. It's roughly on the level of just knowing the sky is blue for him.
③ Does this character have a personal code of ethics or morals? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?He absolutely does, but for both Kevin and Break, they're super fucked up.
As Kevin, he likely had very rigid, black and white ethics and morals, which is also what inevitably got him into trouble. Kevin was not only a knight, but he came from a family of knights, so things like duty and honor were extremely important to him (and still are, to some extent). However, you see the very dark side of such strong duty and honor when it comes to Kevin's storyline. After all, when his master was killed, Kevin was so dedicated and dutiful that he murdered over a hundred innocent people just for the chance to be able to change that event.
After Kevin was successful at changing the past and took on the name of Xerxes Break instead, his morals and ethics definitely greyed out, but you can still see hints of his twisted sense of ethics. Break is very loyal once he decides to give his loyalty, but it's to the point of losing empathy for others outside of that circle of loyalty. Break still doesn't see anything exactly wrong with killing people who are his enemy, whether it's Baskervilles or Illegal Contractors. He might not be murderering truly innocent people anymore, but he still has a very harsh code that he adheres to and doesn't really bother questioning. As such, it's extremely difficult to get him to compromise, for better and for worse.
As Break, he's definitely chilled out, since he wouldn't quite be pushed so far as he was as Kevin, but it's definitely still questionable. He has the honor of a knight for people he cares about, but if you're not one of those people? Break is absolutely ruthless and would likely even come off as if he doesn't have one at all.
